1984 (1 December)
Note: As a consequence of a number of changes made under the terms of the Commonwealth Electoral Legislation Amendment Act of 1983 which established the Australian Electoral Commission, there are a number of changes in the manner in which the information is presented for the 1984 and subsequent elections.
1. Section 213 of the original 1918 Act was amended to provide that the order in which the names of candidates would appear on the ballot paper instead of being listed alphabetically would be determined by drawing numbers out of a spherical container.
2. Section 277 of the original act was also amended to provide that during the vote counting process after a candidate had been elected the Electoral Commission could direct that 'for the purpose of obtaining information' the Returning Officer should conduct a distribution of the second and later preferences of candidates. This process has enabled the provision of a final two candidate result in each division.
3. Prior to 1984 the results published by the Australian Electoral Commission (or relevant authorities in the past) had been at the subdivisional level for federal electorates. Since that time they have been at polling place level. In Western Australia at least this situation seems to have resulted because ballot papers used to be taken from polling places to subdivisional centres before they were counted.
