University Librarian Vicki Williamson brought the strategic planning process, a novel approach in the early 1990s, to the Library.
With the slogan ‘Helping our clients to navigate the Information Universe’, the newly branded Curtin University of Technology Library and Information Service (LIS) formulated a vision to be client focused and technologically advanced, setting out six areas of focus with clear action plans and strategies.
This planning approach encompassed annual senior management team retreats, regular updating of planning documents, and ensuring accountability through periodic reporting of progress on objectives.
In 1997, the Library articulated an ambitious vision to be ‘recognised internationally as a leader amongst technological university library and information services’.11 |

This four-page statement included an ambitious vision, stating in part:
*
LIS is a client-focussed, dynamic university library and information service that provides...ready and timely access to information.
*
LIS aims to function with state-of-the-art systems and technology as an integral part of the University’s teaching, research and learning programs. |
