The collections

Branch libraries at Kalgoorlie, Northam and Shenton Park

During 1969, three institutions merged with WAIT: the Western Australian School of Mines (originally opened in 1902), the Muresk Agricultural College at Northam (dating from 1926) and Schools of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy in operation since the 1950s at Shenton Park. The Shenton Park Library was established in 1972 by amalgamating the collections of the two schools.Responsibility passed to the WAIT Library to support library services for each of these branches.

While the School of Mines had a well-established library and important collections in the fields of mining engineering and geology, Muresk had no formal library or staff and little in the way of books. Some basic library facilities existed at Shenton Park.

Additional professional staff were appointed to develop the three libraries. Ordering, processing and cataloguing of materials for all these branch libraries, in the main, was completed centrally at the Library at Bentley.

In 1980, the Western Australian School of Mines merged with the Eastern Goldfields Technical College and the library collections of each institution were integrated. Library services for the new Kalgoorlie College were provided by a mix of staff in a new Learning Resources Centre.
