This is a photograph of ELSIE CURTIN.

She was married to JOHN CURTIN who was

PRIME MINISTER of Australia during the war

years of 1941 to 1945.

Before she married, two of her main interests were in

SOCIAL ISSUES and POLITICS.

As wife of the leader of the Australian nation in wartime,

she carried out public duties such as launching SHIPS,

entertaining important visitors at THE LODGE in Canberra,

and at PRESS CONFERENCES.

As well, she ran the HOUSEHOLD, helped with her husband's ELECTORAL WORK, and

was an active member of local LABOR WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION.

In the post-war period, she became a JUSTICE OF THE PEACE and was awarded a CBE

(COMMANDER of the British Empire) for her service to the COMMUNITY and to her

HUSBAND. She died in 1975.
