Awards presented to the JCPML and its Staff

2008 Curtin University Emeritus Professor and Honorary Doctorate of Letters

In February 2008, JCPML Historical Consultant, Professor David Black will receive the title of Emeritus Professor of Curtin University of Technology for his distinguished academic reputation both nationally and internationally and his contribution to the study and teaching of history and politics. He will be further honoured with an Honorary Doctorate of Letters for his lifelong commitment to the study of history and politics, his exceptional service to professional and public life, and the benefits these have brought to Curtin.

2008 Curtin University Fellow

In February 2008, Kandy-Jane Henderson will be named a Curtin University of Technology Fellow for her distinguished service to the University, the archival profession and to the community in her role as Foundation Archivist of the JCPML.

2007 Professional Teaching Council of WA Outstanding Professional Service Award

JCPML Education Officer Ros Marshall was presented with an Outstanding Professional Service Award in October 2007 for her tireless and enthusiastic contribution to the Political and Legal Educators' Association of WA over many years.

2005 Australian Society of Archivists' Mander Jones Award

At the Australian Society of Archivists' conference in Wellington, New Zealand, in October 2005, Kandy-Jane Henderson, JCPML Archivist, and Ross Gibbs, Director General of the National Archives of Australia, accepted the Society's prestigious Mander Jones Award 'for the best finding aid to an archival collection held by an Australian institution or about Australia' for the publication John Curtin: Guide to archives of Australia's prime ministers.

The guide, jointly published by the NAA and JCPML and authored by David Black (JCPML Historical Consultant) and Lesley Wallace (JCPML Collections Librarian), includes biographies of Australia's wartime Prime Minister John Curtin and his wife Elsie and a comprehensive listing of archival records relating to them. The guide was released in both print and electronic forms simultaneously in November 2004. The electronic version (a pdf file which can be freely downloaded via the NAA's online shop) contains hyperlinks to many of the records listed so researchers can quickly access digitised material via the NAA's RecordSearch database and the JCPML's Electronic Research Archive.

Museums Australia (WA) Organisational Award (2004)

The Museums Australia (WA) Organisational Award for 2004 was presented to the JCPML by the Minister for the Arts at the Awards evening on 28 May 2004. The award is in recognition of the JCPML’s innovative partnership with the Perth Theatre Company, which resulted in the production of the award-winning play Shadow Of The Eagle. The award acknowledges the leadership shown in undertaking this groundbreaking dramatic partnership between an archives and theatre company. This bold venture has helped the JCPML reach wider public audiences, not only in Western Australia but across the country, as the play toured from Canberra to Darwin in 2004.

West Australian State Arts Sponsorship Award (2002/2003)

The JCPML worked in association with the Perth Theatre Company to develop the play Shadow of the Eagle which premiered in Perth in May 2003.

The partnership was acknowledged at the 10th annual West Australian State Arts Sponsorship Awards where the JCPML was awarded a 2002/2003 Partnership Endorsement for its role in supporting culture and the arts in Western Australia.

Centenary Medal awarded to JCPML Archivist (2003)

Congratulations to Kandy-Jane Henderson on being awarded a Centenary Medal. The medal was presented in recognition of her service to the community as Archivist of the John Curtin Prime Ministerial Library.

This distinctive commemorative medal marks the achievements of a broad cross section of Australian society at the commencement of a new century. The JCPML is proud that Kandy-Jane has been named as one of the many outstanding people whose services have helped the community.

2002 Australian Society of Archivists' Mander Jones Award

In August 2002 the John Curtin Prime Ministerial Library won the Mander Jones Award for a publication 'making the greatest contribution to archives or a related field in Australia written by or on behalf of a corporate body'. Kandy-Jane Henderson, JCPML Archivist, accepted the award for the JCPML web project Understanding Society through its Records which is part of the JCPML's ongoing endeavour to contribute to the development and promotion of archives. The Mander Jones Awards are sponsored by the Australian Society of Archivists.

The project gives users an overview of recordkeeping, reveals how records provide evidence of our lives, document our culture, and help to ensure a just society.

Sponsoring the Arts 2000/2001 - Best Industry Initiative Patron

On 22 November 2001, the JCPML was presented with a WA State Arts Sponsorship Prestige Award for Best Industry Initiative Patron from the Minister for Culture and the Arts. The awards give recognition to corporate sector sponsorship of the arts, and over 100 nominations were received for the six Prestige Awards. Other nominations shortlisted in this category included the RAC, Water Corporation and Foxgold Pty Ltd.

The JCPML was acknowledged for its pro-active partnership with the Perth Theatre Company to develop a play about the relationship between John Curtin and Douglas MacArthur. The play had a season in Perth and Kalgoorlie in 2003 and toured other centres around Australia in 2004.

Educational Resource wins Award (2000)

On 17 August 2000, Ms Kandy-Jane Henderson, JCPML Archivist, accepted a High Commendation award for the JCPML educational resource John Curtin and International Relations during World War II for a 'publication making the greatest contribution to archives or a related field in Australia written by or on behalf of a corporate body'. The Mander Jones Awards are sponsored by the Australian Society of Archivists.

VALA Scholarship (1999)

A Travel Scholarship from the the Victorian Association of Library Automation (VALA) was awarded to Lesley Carman-Brown, Public Programs Coordinator with the JCPML, to travel to the UK in 1999. Lesley investigated new developments in information technology which aim to provide electronic access to such difficult collection areas as manuscripts, newspapers, three dimensional objects and video and audio material which comprise the diverse range of materials held in cultural institutions such as libraries, archives and museums. The information Lesley brought back from her trip has been of great value to the JCPML in continuing enhancing electronic access through the Electronic Research Archive (ERA). Lesley presented her findings to the VALA Conference in Melbourne in 2000.

Museum Publication Design Award (1998)

In November 1998 the John Curtin Prime Ministerial Library was awarded a Certificate of Commendation from Museums Australia for the supplementary material category of the Museum Publication Design Awards for a series of invitations used throughout 1998. There were nearly 300 nominations for the Design Awards from cultural institutions around Australia.
